Ingredients

  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 3 apples peeled and grated into shreds
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg

Instructions

  • Place syrup, milk, butter, and salt in a pan over a medium temperature cooking fire or stove and melt the butter, stirring until combined. Let cool.
  • Dissolve the yeast in the warm water with the sugar and let sit for 5 minutes in a large bowl.
  • Throw in the syrup and milk mixture as well as the egg and stir.
  • Gradually stir in the flour about a half cup at a time.
  • Fold in the apples and spices.
  • Move to a floured cutting board and knead for a few minutes. If it's still sticky after a bit, add in a touch more flour, continuing to add until it's just barely not sticky.
  • Oil a separate bowl, transfer the dough to it, cover with a towel and let it rise for one hour.
  • Knead the dough for a few minutes, cut it into two loaves, and let those rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Heat oven to 375 °F (190 °C), place loaves on a greased baking sheet and bake until golden brown on the top, at least 20 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and enjoy the warmest, sweetest, most fall tasting loaf of bread you've ever had!

Notes

This bread is an awesome fall treat to make for your fellow adventurers. It's a super easy way to get into baking your own bread. The apples add a nice texture to the pillowy dough, and the maple syrup gives it an awesome sweetness! Make it for your next Dungeons and Dragons session and every adventurer will have plenty to snack on.
