Crusty Cheddar, Garlic and Rosemary Tavern Loaf - DnD, Fantasy, Video Game Inspired Recipes

An interesting goblin-fellow stopped by the inn today requesting a few recipes for a book he was writing. Since the garden at the inn is thriving, I thought I would harvest some garlic and rosemary, and bake something up for him!
This recipe is written in collaboration with Unlimited Realms. They have launched a kickstarter for a new 5e home building guide called "Gobbo's Guide to Hearths and Home". This hardback book comes with 3 new races, 3 new Sub-classes, and, most excitingly, the rules for building a home base for your adventuring party.
This book will provide options for creating bases of all sorts, from a family homestead to an ancient sanctum. Different types of bases will provide different buffs and story hooks to your campaign, and you will have the option to add different extensions that will open up a range of possibilities to your players, such as forges, alters, greenhouses, and more. Not only that, the book will provide rules for building a community of NPCs that can inhabit the base, from pets to family to staff, and much much more! Check out their Kickstarter, the link will be provided on this recipe when the kickstarter goes live!

Equipment

  • 1 Dutch Oven

Ingredients

  • 3 cup all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 ¼ cup water warm, between 100-110F
  • 4 tbsp garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh rosemary finely chopped
  • 8 oz sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

First Rise

  • Combine the yeast, warm water, and honey in a large mixing bowl. Let proof for 5 minutes (the mixture will become foamy).
  • Add salt, rosemary, minced garlic, and cheese to the bowl.
  • Add the flour a little bit at a time, and stir with a spatula until all of the flour is incorporated. The dough should be slightly shaggy.
  • Coat all sides of the dough with olive oil, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let sit to rise until the dough has doubled in size (about 1 hour).

Final Rise + Shaping the Boule

  • Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, do not flatten the dough.
  • This loaf will be boule (round) shaped. Grab each corner of the dough and pull it to the center of the loaf, as if you are closing an envelope. Repeat this process about 4 times, or until the dough begins to feel slightly stiff.
  • Flip the dough over. Using both hands, drag the dough towards you to create tension on the outer layer of the dough. Rotate the dough and repeat the process 2-3 more times or until the dough is a uniform shape with no tears.
  • Flour a medium mizing bowl and place the loaf seam-side down. Cover with a clean kitchen towl and let rise for 30 minutes.

Bake

  • Place the empty dutch oven into the oven and heat to 450F
  • Once preheated, remove the dutch oven. Line with parchement so the bread will be easier to remove, and carefully add the dough seam side up.
  • Cover the dutch oven and bake for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes is up, remove the dutch oven lid and continue to bake for 15 minutes, or until the bread gets a deep golden-brown color on top.
  • Remove bread from oven and let cool.
  • Slice, serve, and enjoy adventurer!
