Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups quick cooking grits
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp sriracha
  • Salt and pepper
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ lb smoky bacon
  • 1 lb medium shrimp shelled and deveined
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 fried eggs
  • ½ cup scallions
  • 6 tbsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Bring the water and broth to a simmer in your cooking pot over a medium-high cooking fire or stove. Slowly add the grits while stirring. Simmer for 5 minutes then turn the heat to low.
  • Add the soy sauce, salt, pepper, and sriracha and mix. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes or until the grits are no longer grainy.
  • Add the butter and stir until melted. Set aside, covered.
  • Toss the shrimp in the oil and add some salt.
  • Fry your bacon, remove the strips, then chop. Wipe out most of the grease, then add the shrimp into the pan. Sear for 1 to 2 minutes, flip, then sear until they are just barely undercooked, about another 1 to 2 minutes. They'll finish cooking from their residual heat.
  • Fry your eggs to taste in the same pan without wiping out the grease.
  • Serve the shrimp, eggs, and bacon on top of the grits, garnished with the scallions and sesame seeds.
  • Resume adventuring!

Notes

This is such a wonderful mixture of flavors. The savory bacon and eggs play with the clean seafood taste of shrimp and the Asian zing. This recipe is inspired by the Shrimp and Grits recipe from a fantastic cookbook, Momofuku. If you'd like to see the original and support the Inn by using our affiliate link, click here. We simplified some parts, adjusted quantities, and raised introduced some new flavors. This recipe is a fantastic way for your Dungeons and Dragons players to feel immersed during their next visit to the legendary port city of Waterdeep! Featured at many taverns in the rough Harbor district, its warmth will make you forget the dangerous dark alleys outside for at least a little while.
